The course will examine the genre of film noir. It will look at the plot, directors, actors, visual and audio techniques that make up a movie that can be called: film noir.
The genre is unique, has dramatic use and contrasts of light and dark, shadows, Venetian blinds, fog, close-ups, 1/2 shots and techniques that create a mood that is part of the plot. “Style determines substance, mood overwhelms the plot, form and style become inseparable from content.”
Film noir plots feature the hard-boiled detective, the femme fatale, shady characters, criminals, police and crime. Two themes of film noir are: “why? for no reason at all” and “you might think you know what’s happening, but you don’t.”
Will try to show some scenes from Citizen Kane, Double Indemnity and Chinatown.
