Graduate Intern

I am currently finishing my M.A. in Professional Counseling at Lindenwood University after finishing my undergraduate degree at Eastern Illinois University. I received a B.A. in General Studies with a double minor in Psychology and Sociology. I am a combat veteran that served eight years in the military. I completed a tour in Iraq from 2003-2005. When I returned from Iraq, I was in law enforcement for five years within different municipalities.

As a counselor, I will bring my personal experience and understanding to better help those in need. I want to eliminate the stigma involved with first responders and military that it makes them weak to get help. Mental health is a very important aspect of those jobs and I understand that many first responders dedicate their lives to help others while not seeing that they themselves might need some help from time to time to process the many difficult things they experience.

I was wounded during an incident in Iraq that took the life of my good friend; I also lost four other members of my unit during our yearlong deployment. I used Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and mindfulness techniques to overcome my own PTSD and related traumas.

My interest is in helping others that are also suffering from PTSD. PTSD can come from many kinds of traumas people experience, not just military or first responders. I facilitate peer support groups and SMART Recovery groups that help with addiction, especially for those that self-medicate for relief.
